Poway Temporary Power

Poway calls itself the City in the Country and the building work matches the name. Large parcels, houses set well back from the road, horse property, custom builds and substantial remodels on lots where the nearest utility pole may be a very long way from where the work is actually happening. That distance is the defining constraint on almost every job we quote here.

A long feeder run means voltage drop, and voltage drop is the thing that quietly damages equipment and makes trades think their tools are failing. The right answer is normally a temporary power pole sited close to the work with a correctly sized feeder from the point of connection, rather than a cheap pole at the road and two hundred feet of cord. We size that feeder for the actual distance and the actual load, which occasionally means a bigger cable than anyone wanted to pay for and always means equipment that runs properly.

On the more remote parcels, particularly out toward the eastern edge of the city, the sums often favor skipping the temporary service entirely. Where connecting would mean a substantial trench or a new pole line, a generator rental for the duration of the build is straightforwardly cheaper and quicker. We will run both numbers rather than assuming, because the crossover depends on how long the job runs and how far the connection actually is.

Public safety power shutoffs are a genuine operational issue in Poway during wind events, and every contractor working here has lost days to one. A site with a generator on it keeps working; a site without one sends everybody home. Through the autumn we keep sets on standby rental for exactly this reason, and on a long build it is worth budgeting for rather than reacting to.

Inland Poway gets properly hot in the summer, comfortably into the nineties and beyond, which puts portable cooling on the list for any job that reaches the finish stages between June and October. Custom homes here tend to have large volumes of glazing and high ceilings, and a space like that with no permanent HVAC is a difficult place to hang cabinets or lay a finish floor.

Rural lots also mean poor cellular coverage in pockets and long response times if something goes wrong overnight. Portable WiFi with an external antenna is often the only way to get reliable connectivity on a site out here, and it is what makes a camera system usable on an isolated parcel where nobody drives past after dark.
