National City Temporary Power

National City is the most industrial city we cover, and the work reflects it. The marine terminal, the shipyards, the auto logistics yards and the light manufacturing along Mile of Cars and the harbor frontage all generate a different class of job from a residential remodel: three-phase, higher amperage, and often on a site that has to keep operating while the work happens.

Three-phase temporary service is the default here rather than the exception. Welding plant, compressors, hoists and process equipment do not run sensibly on single phase, and the distribution has to be planned as a system: the temporary service, then properly rated distribution out to the work, with GFCI protection at every point a person plugs in. We build that as one design rather than adding boxes as the job grows, which is how it usually goes wrong.

Salt is a serious problem on the waterfront and it is worse here than on the open coast, because industrial sites combine salt air with dust, forklift traffic and the occasional knock. Enclosures need to be sealed, terminations need anti-oxidant compound, and anything at ground level in a working yard needs physical protection. We build to that standard because on a terminal site nobody is going to notice a corroding lug until it takes something out.

A lot of National City work is on live sites, which changes the sequencing more than anything else. Shutdowns get scheduled around production or vessel movements, not around our convenience, and that frequently means night and weekend change-overs. A generator rental is often the only way to keep the operating side of a facility running while its service is worked on, and the sizing on those has to account for motor starting rather than just running load.

The larger yards run around the clock in stretches, and lighting on an industrial site is a safety system rather than a convenience. Light towers positioned to cover traffic routes and work areas without glaring into an operator’s eyes is a genuine skill, and getting it wrong on a yard with moving plant is dangerous.

Security on industrial and port-adjacent sites is a standing concern given the value of what sits on them. Cellular security cameras that work without site internet, positioned to cover the gate and the material lay-down, are a standard part of what we deliver here rather than an add-on somebody asks about later.
