La Jolla Temporary Power

La Jolla work is high-end residential almost without exception: deep remodels, additions, rebuilds and the occasional ground-up on lots where the land is worth more than anything we will ever install on it. The technical requirements are not unusual. The constraints around them are.

Streets in the Village, on the Shores side and up the hill are narrow, steep and often have no parking to spare. Utilities are undergrounded across much of the area, which means the point of connection is a pull box or a pad-mounted transformer rather than an overhead line, and it means the location of a temporary service is dictated by where the utility infrastructure actually is rather than where it would be convenient. We locate that before quoting, because guessing produces a number that changes later.

Neighborhood expectations are a real design input here. A pedestal that is visible from the street, cables run across a sidewalk or an open-frame generator running at seven in the morning will generate complaints, and complaints turn into stop-work conversations. We position equipment out of sight where the site allows it, protect and cover any cable crossing, and specify sound-attenuated sets on any job that needs a generator rental for more than a day or two.

Everything gets the coastal specification without exception. La Jolla sits on the water, the marine air is aggressive, and remodels here run long enough that a badly specified enclosure will visibly corrode before the job finishes. Sealed enclosures, stainless hardware, anti-oxidant on aluminum terminations, gasketed covers.

The lots are tight and frequently steep, with the work happening well below or well above street level. That makes distribution the interesting part of the job rather than the service itself: getting power safely from the connection point to three different working levels without a spaghetti of cords, with GFCI protection where people actually plug in, and without anything running where somebody will trip on it.

Long remodels with the owners living elsewhere need connectivity for cameras, access control and the daily documentation that a project of this value generates. Portable WiFi covers the period between the old service going out and the new one coming in, and it is what makes site security cameras work on a property where an empty house on a well-known street is an obvious target.
