Carlsbad Temporary Power

Carlsbad splits cleanly between the business parks along the Palomar Airport Road corridor and the coastal strip either side of the village, and the two need almost nothing in common from us. The corridor is life-science, medical-device and light-manufacturing tenant improvement work, and those fit-outs pull three-phase loads that a residential-scale pedestal cannot begin to serve. The coastal side is remodels, hotels and mixed-use on lots where the constraint is space and salt rather than amperage.

On a business park fit-out the load calculation is the whole job. Clean rooms, lab equipment, compressors and temporary HVAC add up quickly, and getting it wrong in either direction is expensive: undersized and you are back to re-spec mid-project, oversized and you paid for capacity nobody used. We do the calculation off the actual equipment schedule rather than a square-footage rule of thumb, and we size the temporary service and the distribution to match.

Landlord coordination is the other Carlsbad-specific wrinkle. In a multi-tenant building the house panel usually has capacity on paper but not availability in practice, and the property manager has a view about what can be tapped and when. We deal with that conversation directly rather than leaving the general contractor to broker it, and where the honest answer is that the building cannot support the construction load we bring in a generator rental instead and say so early.

The village and the coastal blocks get our salt-air specification: sealed enclosures, stainless hardware and anti-oxidant compound on every aluminum termination. Carlsbad sits directly on the water for most of its length and corrosion at a lug is the most common avoidable failure on any coastal temporary service. It costs very little to prevent at install and a genuinely irritating amount to fix at seven in the morning.

Fit-out schedules in the business parks are compressed by nature, because a tenant is paying rent on space they cannot occupy. That drives a lot of second-shift and weekend work, which in turn drives construction lighting and, in the summer months when a sealed building has no working HVAC, portable cooling. Both go on the same order as the power, which saves a delivery and keeps one point of contact for the whole package.

Data matters on these jobs too. Life-science and medical fit-outs run inspections, submittals and commissioning documentation from the site, and the building network is invariably the last thing energized. A portable WiFi unit on the trailer covers the gap and keeps the paperwork moving while the permanent service is still a work order.
