The part that matters is the sizing, and it is where most rentals go wrong. Add up every nameplate on a job and you will be quoted a set twice the size the work needs, which costs more to rent, burns more fuel and runs lightly loaded — and a diesel running lightly loaded for weeks wet-stacks and gives trouble. Undersize it instead and the first cold start of the biggest motor stalls the whole site. We size off the real running load with proper allowance for motor starting current, and we would rather talk you down a frame size than up one. Where a job is going to run long, we will also tell you when a temporary power pole is simply cheaper than continuing to rent.

Reasons To Rent A Generator
The situations where renting beats every other option:
The site has no utility power yet
Grading, early framing and site trailers all start before a meter can be set. A towable set covers that window, and comes off rent the week the permanent or temporary service goes live rather than sitting there earning money.
The utility connection is not worth making
On a remote parcel where connecting means a long trench or a new pole line, renting is straightforwardly cheaper for the duration of the build. Around Poway and the eastern back country that is a common answer rather than an unusual one.
A shutoff or an outage would stop everything
Public safety power shutoffs during wind events are a genuine operational risk inland, and an unplanned outage on a commercial site costs real money by the hour. A standby set on rent through the autumn is cheap insurance.
The existing service cannot carry construction load
On a fit-out or a refurbishment where the building keeps operating, the house service often has nothing spare. A generator carries the construction load without touching the tenant supply or requiring a shutdown.

How We Work
Site walk, load check, permit and utility application, then install. One coordinator from the first call to collection.
1. Work out the real load
We go through what actually runs at the same time, and we look specifically at the largest motor on the site because starting current, not running current, is what decides the frame size. Getting this right is the difference between a set that works and one that trips or wet-stacks.
2. Deliver, position and connect
We site the set for airflow, noise and fuelling access, connect it to your distribution properly, check the grounding and bonding, and commission it under load rather than leaving you to find out at seven the next morning.
3. Fuel, service and swap out
Scheduled refuelling on a run we manage, servicing on hours, and a replacement unit on site quickly if anything faults. At the end we collect it, and if the job is moving to metered power we handle that changeover too.

Diesel generator rental, 20kW to 500kW
The construction workhorse: towable, weatherproof, with a belly fuel tank sized for a working day or considerably more. Available across the whole range so the set matches the load rather than the load being made to fit the set.
Commercial and industrial generator rental
Larger three-phase sets for industrial sites, process plant, data rooms and facilities that have to keep operating. Paralleled sets where the load justifies it, and load-bank testing where the application demands proof rather than assurance.
Emergency and standby generator rental
Sets on rent specifically to cover outage and shutoff risk, with automatic transfer where the installation supports it. Common through the autumn wind season inland and standard for any business that loses money by the hour when the power goes.

A generator on its own does not power anything. Cable, distribution boards and spider boxes get the power from the set to where the trades are, protected properly at every point somebody plugs in.
What Generator Rental Costs
Generator rental in San Diego County broadly runs $150 to $300 a day for a small portable set, $500 to $1,500 a week for a typical mid-range towable, and considerably more for large three-phase units. What moves it:
- Size in kW. This is the biggest single factor, and it is exactly why sizing the set to the real load rather than the nameplate total is worth doing properly.
- How long you rent it. Weekly and monthly rates are much better than daily, and a long booking priced monthly is often close to half the equivalent daily rate.
- Fuel. Usually billed on consumption and separate from the rental, and on a big set running long hours it can exceed the rental cost itself.
- Sound attenuation. A quiet set costs more than an open-frame one, and on any residential street it is the only sensible specification.
- Delivery and connection. A licensed connection with commissioning under load is not the same service as a drop-off, and the distance to your site counts.
- Distribution. Cable, boards and spider boxes are priced alongside, and they are what actually makes the set usable on a spread-out site.
We quote a flat weekly or monthly rate with delivery, connection, commissioning and collection inside it, and fuel billed on what the set actually burns. If the job is going to run long enough that a metered temporary service is cheaper, we will show you both numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to buy or rent a generator?
For construction, renting is almost always cheaper. You are paying for the set only while it is on site, and the rental covers maintenance, servicing, fuelling and a replacement unit if it faults. Buying makes sense when a business needs permanent standby cover year after year, at which point a fixed installation usually beats a portable set anyway.
What size generator do I need to rent?
It depends on what runs at once and on the largest motor on the site, because starting current is far higher than running current. A single trade with hand tools might need 5kW to 10kW; a typical residential build 25kW to 60kW; a commercial site with hoists and compressors 100kW and up. What size generator will run a house?
A typical 2,000 square foot home needs roughly 20kW to 25kW to run essentially everything at once, including central air conditioning. If you only need the essentials — refrigerator, lights, furnace fan, a few outlets — 7kW to 10kW covers it. Air conditioning is what drives the number up, because the compressor start is the biggest single load in the house.
What should you not plug into a generator?
Never back-feed a generator into a wall outlet to power a house — it energizes the utility line and can kill a lineman working on it. Use a transfer switch or an interlock. Beyond that, avoid running sensitive electronics off a non-inverter set without protection, do not overload it with high-draw appliances starting together, and never run one indoors or in a garage, including with the door open.
How much does it cost to rent a generator per day?
A small portable set is roughly $150 to $300 a day. A mid-range towable construction unit runs about $500 to $1,500 a week, which is a much better rate than the daily equivalent. Large three-phase sets are priced per project. Fuel is normally billed separately on what is actually burned.
Is it okay to run a generator 24 hours a day?
A properly sized diesel set is designed for continuous duty and will run around the clock as long as it is fueled and serviced on hours. The thing to avoid is running a large set at very light load for weeks, which causes wet-stacking and eventual damage — another reason sizing to the actual load matters more than buying headroom you will not use.
