Coronado is the most logistically awkward place we work, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Everything arrives over the bridge or round the Strand, deliveries have to be timed against traffic that becomes genuinely impassable at the wrong hour, and there is nowhere on the island to stage equipment cheaply. That reality shapes how we plan a job here more than any electrical consideration does.
What it means in practice is that we consolidate. Rather than four separate deliveries across a build, we plan the temporary service, the distribution, the lighting and anything else the site needs onto as few trips as the schedule allows. It costs less, it is less disruptive to a residential street, and it means fewer chances of a truck sitting in bridge traffic on the morning something is needed.
Much of the island is within a historic district or subject to design review, and the older housing stock around Orange Avenue and the numbered streets comes with the constraints you would expect. Services are largely undergrounded, lots are small, and there is often no discreet place to put anything. We site equipment with the streetscape in mind and keep everything as unobtrusive as the work allows.
The Navy presence and the resort properties generate a steady stream of commercial and hospitality work alongside the residential remodels, and those jobs come with access control, security escorting and working windows that are set by somebody else. Temporary power on a site like that has to be installed inside a defined window, which means the planning has to be right the first time because there is rarely a second visit available.
Salt exposure on Coronado is as severe as anywhere in the county, with water on both sides of a narrow island and wind across it constantly. Coastal specification is not optional: sealed enclosures, stainless hardware, anti-oxidant compound on aluminum terminations, and terminations checked rather than assumed.
Because the neighborhoods are dense and largely residential, any generator rental here is a sound-attenuated set positioned with the neighbors in mind, and we would rather talk you out of an open-frame unit than have the job shut down over noise. What is temporary power?
Temporary power is a permitted, metered electrical service installed on a construction site before the building has a permanent one. Usually that is a temporary power pole carrying a meter socket, main breaker, panel and GFCI-protected outlets, grounded and braced to SDG&E’s standard. It runs the trades, the tools and the site trailer through the build and comes out once the permanent service is energized.
How long does it take to get temporary power in San Diego?
Allow two to four weeks from go-ahead to an energized pole across most of the county. The electrical permit is usually quick; the SDG&E meter set is the part that carries a queue and it is why we file the service application as early as your drawings allow. If your start date will not wait, we will bridge it with a generator and take that off rent the week the pole goes live.
Do you handle the permit and the SDG&E application?
Yes, both, on every job. We pull the electrical permit with the city or the county, file the service application with SDG&E including the site plan and load information they need, and meet the inspector on site. You do not fill anything in.
How much does temporary power cost?
A standard residential temporary power pole in San Diego County typically lands between $1,200 and $3,000 installed, permitted and removed at the end. Amperage, the distance from the point of connection, and whether the utility is overhead or underground are what move the number. Larger and three-phase commercial services are quoted per project.

We will run both numbers against your actual schedule rather than steering you to one.
